Dung Beetle Innovations

Dung Beetle Innovations’ mission is to improve the sustainability of livestock production in New Zealand through the introduction of dung beetles.

There are over 6.7 million dairy cows in New Zealand, each producing on average 27 kg of dung a day. By the time you add in another 3.7 million cattle and 29.8 million sheep that is over 100 million tonnes of dung a year.

Dung beetles offer a long term sustainable solution to preventing pastoral-based pollution entering our waterways. They reduce pasture fouling, improve soil fertility, improve water quality, boost pasture productivity, and sequester carbon.

Dung Beetle Innovations was founded in 2014 to import and commercially rear 11 species of dung beetles. Six dung beetle species are available on a commercial scale for sale to livestock farmers throughout New Zealand.

Dung Beetle Innovations is a finalist in the Transforming Food category of the 2017 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards.
