NZ Post has introduced 500 electric vehicles into its delivery fleet to reduce the carbon emissions of every parcel it delivers. It now has the biggest electric vehicle fleet in New Zealand.
Parcel growth is growing as more New Zealanders do their shopping online. Increased delivery capacity is needed and traditionally this would be met with petrol and diesel vehicles. NZ Post has introduced an innovative electric vehicle – the Paxster – to minimise carbon emissions, pollutants and noise while still increasing delivery capacity.
Currently 300 Paxsters are in regular use from Invercargill to Whangarei. By the end of 2017 almost 500 electric vehicles will have been rolled out. Emissions per parcel were reduced by six per cent between the 2016 and 2017 financial years.
NZ Post is a finalist in the Smarter Transport category of the 2017 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards.
