Tomorrow Inc has partnered with Heart of the City and community charities to find a positive way to address begging in Auckland city. Street Guardians gives members of the city street community a weekly opportunity to spend the day doing meaningful, paid work with community organisations.
The partnership involves Auckland City Mission, Lifewise, local businesses and community organisations, as well as Heart of the City. Participants are paired with local community organisations that are in need of extra help on odd jobs – ranging from repairing bikes and building planter boxes, to planting trees and cleaning beaches. A shared lunch is a key feature of the day.
A pilot programme ran for six weeks in 2018 and the programme now has funding to continue into 2020. So far, more than 100 homeless people have been given an alternative to begging that took them out of the city for activities that help community organisations.
