Counties Manukau Health

Organisation Category: Health Care & Social Assistance

  • Profile

CM Health is a major provider of both community- based and secondary health care services and is New Zealand’s fastest growing multicultural area. The CEMARS Certified organisation is one of the largest health boards in New Zealand.

Counties Manukau Health has been measuring its carbon emissions for 10 years now and at the close of 2021 were the recipients of two awards. Toitu awarded CM Health the “Brighter Future Award” for a large organisation and the Healthcare Without Harm organisation gave CM Health two silver awards for GHG reduction and Climate Leadership.

The health sector is about to undergo massive change with the upcoming health reform and has had to be flexible in the last two years due to the pandemic.

Despite this, over the next five years CM Health will be concentrating on reducing our carbon emissions in line with the Carbon Neutral Government Programme( CNGP) and also partaking in a regional climate change assessment risk project which will lead to the implementation of an adaptation plan.

    Sustainability Actions:

Counties Manukau Health adopted a more rounded approach to sustainability in 2012 by incorporating social and environmental aspects to the term practising sustainable healthcare. Many of our programmes of work incorporate these elements in conjunction with incorporating carbon reduction targets. We have successfully implemented organisation wide recycling systems and set up green teams in a range of clinical areas. Green teams have proven to be successful as they identify problems within their spheres of influence, engage with team members, become advocates and change agents who foster sustainability and sustainable change.
