Getting the best from the Climate Action Toolbox

The Climate Action Toolbox has been designed to help businesses start taking action to reduce its carbon emissions. It is especially suitable for small and medium-sized businesses. It may also be helpful to larger businesses starting out.

The Toolbox focuses on five key areas – transport (moving people and goods), office operations, site operations and equipment, and the design and making of products. Be motivated by the many inspirational stories of local businesses taking climate action today.

Complete the two-minute assessment

The Toolbox starts with a simple self-assessment to help work out the key areas in your business where emissions can be reduced.

Check out the priority action areas and identify potential actions

Take a look at the potential actions. Each has an impact rating indicating how effective it could be. There are step-by-step guides, with handy tips and links to useful information.

Create and save your action list

Start by selecting a few actions using the ‘Add to list’ option. They will be added to the Climate Action List at the top of the results page.

We highly recommend saving your results by selecting the 'Save' option. That means you can return to your results from any device and continue your climate action journey, anytime.

Keep the momentum going

When you’ve taken action, mark it as complete on your Climate Action List. Then choose a couple more actions to keep the momentum going.

Understand more about your carbon emissions

Enter data on your activities and calculate your carbon emissions. Based on your results, the toolbox will identify the most relevant actions to help your business reduce emissions and help you refine your action plan. The toolbox sets a recommended reduction target and you can track your emissions over time.

Who's behind the Toolbox?

The Climate Action Toolbox was created by Sustainable Business Network's Climate Action 20/25 programme. The programme is a collaboration of organisations from the public and private sectors that believe climate action needs to be integrated into the way we do business in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Initiated by the Sustainable Business Network and co-led with business.govt.nz (Ministry for Business, Innovation & Employment), the group now includes BNZ, EECA, Spark and Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency). Meridian Energy and NZ Trade & Enterprise were also foundation partners.

The toolbox was co-designed and developed with design consultancy DNA. It is hosted on the award-winning business.govt.nz platform, which provides tools and expert advice from government and industry, designed to help Kiwi businesses save time and succeed.
