The Formary is a Textile Research and Development company significantly reducing the environmental impacts of clothing and textiles by designing and building the systems, technology and products to divert clothing from landfill, looping resources back into use and extracting much greater value. Established in 2008, The Formary consults to organisations worldwide. Its first client was global coffee giant Starbucks: a two-year collaborative project created closed loop solutions from Starbuck’s vast supply of used coffee sacks resulting in WoJo®, a high performance, award-winning upholstery fabric.
In New Zealand The Formary established the Textile Reuse Programme which was officially launched by the Hon Eugenie Sage. The programme is a collaboration between industry, government and social enterprise, building a macro system for used clothing and textiles to capture their full value. It aims to significantly reduce the environmental impacts caused by the production and the decomposition of textiles. Partners in the Textile Reuse Programme include Wellington Zoo, Wellington City Council, Barkers Menswear, Alsco New Zealand and Deane Apparel.
The Formary’s digital platform creates oversight over used clothing material flows, and environmental impacts. This drives the reuse and recovery of resources, informing product design and materials selection, steering products towards compatibility with end-of-life solutions.
The Formary has received awards from HRH Prince Charles and UK sustainable design guru Kevin McCloud for ground-breaking work in textile development, as well as Sustainability and Emerging Services awards in the Wellington Business Gold Awards.
