It is estimated that construction and demolition materials make up to half of the waste we send to landfill in Aotearoa New Zealand. The built environment is also responsible for 15% of this country's long-lived greenhouse gas emissions.

However, there are many examples of construction projects where waste and carbon have been reduced by using circular economy principles. In a circular economy, waste and carbon are designed out in the first place, materials are kept in use for as long as possible and nature is restored, not degraded.
