Auckland Transport finalist story

The Auckland Bike Challenge, run by Auckland Transport, was the first workplace cycle challenge for Auckland businesses. The aim was to get as many people riding a bike ‘anytime, anywhere’ during the month of February 2016.

Over the month, workplaces challenged each other to see who could get the highest percentage of staff on a bike for 10 minutes or more. 167 organisations took part in the challenge, including 2,312 participants who recorded a total of 23,433 trips.

Benefits included: a saving of 22,710 kg of carbon dioxide, reduced single occupancy car travel and traffic congestion, and a healthier workplace through physical activity that improved staff well-being.

The challenge has promoted an ongoing commitment to change. 61% of new riders said they are riding more often than before the challenge. 98% of participants plan to join the challenge again next year.

Auckland Transport collaborated with partners to promote the challenge. It plans to grow the challenge, and the NZ Transport Authority will run a national challenge using the Love to Ride platform in 2017.

Auckland Transport is a finalist in the Renewables Impact category of the 2016 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards.
