Buffie Mawhinney (Ranui Community Centre)

Buffie is a role model for socially sustainable and community enterprises. She has been closely involved in the Ranui, West Auckland local community for the last seven years.

She works part of her week at the Community Gardens and the rest of it managing a social enterprise – non-profit café, KORERO.

Through her work in the Gardens, Buffie shows local people how to become more self-sufficient by growing a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. She runs classes in compost making, seed raising, pruning fruit trees, and pizza oven building as well as organising pizza parties and spring fairs.

KORERO café employs locals, uses organic, free range and fair trade products as much as possible, and composts all food waste or gives it away as animal food. Recently the café has been rebuilt.  Buffie wanted to show that it is possible to reuse and recycle the majority of waste from the rebuilding. She succeeded in stopping seven tonnes of construction and demolition waste from going to landfill. This was done through upcycling and reusing materials e.g. doors made into tables and cabinets, and cupboards made from waste timber. She also held upcycling workshops for adults and children and encouraged local participation. Through her efforts $29,000 was saved.

Buffie is a finalist in the Sustainability Champion category of the 2016 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards
