Counties Manukau Health finalist story

Counties Manukau (CM) Health has been on a journey towards becoming more sustainable since 2012. It was the first Australasian healthcare system to measure, manage and reduce its carbon footprint.

CM Health is CEMARS certified (Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme) and has an ambitious 20% carbon emissions reduction target to reach by 2017.

Protecting and promoting the health of the community is an integral component of the organisational strategy. The environmental sustainability programme, which began in 2012, focuses on carbon reduction. Emissions have been cut by 2,580 tCO2e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent), equating to 2,650 times the average electricity use of one home in one year.

CM Health is one of the largest employers in the South Auckland region and sees hundreds of thousands of patients and families each year. Effective staff engagement helps the carbon reduction programme.

The Environmental Advisory Group is currently working on a revised strategy and a new set of targets that will take CM Health beyond 2017 and into the next few decades.
