CSC is a membership-based buying group (an organisation that pulls together the combined buying power of all its members to negotiate discounts with suppliers)
It operates competitively in the private sector. It is also a charitable trust and social enterprise.
The organisation takes its values statement, ‘people over transactions’, and entwines it into how it operates. It understands that you cannot have community if you prioritise transactions, yet we accept this as being a normal way to do business.
CSC works to reduce the everyday business costs for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through forming partnerships and sharing rebate earned with not-for-profit organisations. Through sharing knowledge it helps with procurement and Corporate Social Responsibility.
Reducing the everyday business costs helps SMEs, which are the back bone of our economy. They play a major part in the wealth, employment and overall wellbeing of our communities. The income CSC derives is then recycled back into communities.
There are many social enterprises in New Zealand and several buying groups. As far as CSC is aware, it is the only organisation that combines the two. Over 1,800 SMEs make use of their contracts. Money donated for disaster relief has predominately gone into the Pacific Islands.
CSC Buying Group is a finalist in the Community Innovation category of the 2016 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards
