Foodstuffs NZ have installed sub-meters in some of their high profile stores, an innovative way to enable energy savings.
Foodstuffs has installed sub-meters to capture and analyse energy use in stores. This Monitoring and Targeting Programme has enabled energy saving actions to be implemented across a significant group of high profile stores within the energy intensive supermarket sector.
Foodstuffs’ Energy Strategy started with the establishment of an energy baseline for each store, based on 2012 actual energy use data and NIWA supplied local weather data for each area. The company then set an energy reduction target of 3% by the conclusion of the 24 month monitoring period in 2015.
Monitoring has involved monthly reporting to store owners, including key findings and recommendations for energy reduction, and rankings between stores to create internal competition and increase engagement in the programme. It has led to a good understanding of the environmental and financial benefits of implementing recommendations.
On average, the 33 stores on the initial round of sub-metering have seen a 7% reduction in energy usage. This translates as annualised savings of 3,564,726 kWh between March 2012 and 31 May 2014: 174% of the EECA funding target. In dollar terms, this represents $340k in energy savings.
Based on this success a second round of 22 stores will sub-metered between September and December 2014. In total by Christmas 2014, Foodstuffs will have 63 sites on sub-metering with monthly analysis and reporting.
Detailed analysis of the energy usage/efficiency of the stores involved has enabled an attractive return on investment period to be realised of less than 36 months. The success of the programme has been promoted to all businesses in the wider group.
Foodstuffs NZ was awarded a Judges Commendation for Energy Management in the 2014 NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards, and were finalists in the Energy Management category.
