Kiwibank and Banqer have built a financial literacy programme for young New Zealanders that is used in more than 1,000 classrooms across the country.
They hope to create a generation of school leavers who are more financially capable, saving savvy and confidently entrepreneurial than ever before.
The Banqer platform is introduced by the teacher and integrated alongside other classroom activity. Children navigate a colourful dashboard that allows them to set up their own bank account, transfer money, pay tax and track their spending, alongside a suite of other tools and learning modules. Kiwibank and Banqer are working together to provide subscriptions to use Banqer. They are also monitoring the financial literacy and capability of classrooms that use Banqer and sharing the success stories with New Zealand.
Currently, 500 schools and more than 30,000 students are using Banqer. The goal is to have 2,100 classrooms using Banqer by July 2018. Soon to launch is the Banqer Academy for staff and a parent portal. Parents will be able to see what their children are learning, and improve their own financial capability through tools such as dinner table conversation guides.
