Resene PaintWise is a product stewardship programme that takes waste paint and paint packaging and either recycles them or safely disposes of them.
The programme, the first of its kind in the world, was developed out of necessity: previously getting rid of unwanted paint meant waiting for the once or twice a year Hazmobile service, which was run at great expense to councils.
PaintWise allows waste paint to be dropped off year round, any time a Resene store is open. The recovered paint is diverted to community groups, typically to cover up graffiti; metal packaging is recycled; and plastic packaging recycled back into 100 per cent recycled Resene paint pails.
Since starting in 2004, more than two millions paint packs have been collected. More than 400,000 kg of steel and more than 200,000 kg of plastic has been recycled. Over 500,000 litres of solvent borne paint has been directed to safe solvent recovery centres and 190,000 litres of paint donated to community projects.
