The Achieving at Waitakere successfully piloted the Managed Moves programme in 2017. This is a partnership between organisations that work with at risk youth and give them the best possible access to education.
The partnership is between 12 secondary schools and the Waitakere Alternative Education Consortium, Ministry of Education, Waitemata District Health Board, HealthWEST, Henderson Police Youth Aid, Oranga Tamariki, Learning Support, Marinoto Youth Mental Health Service, Tuilaepa Youth Mentoring Service, Family Action, Strengthening Families, CADS Altered High Service, Community Action on Youth and Drugs, Youth at Risk, Man Alive Counselling and Mentoring, Koru Specialists, and TOMM (The outcomes measurement model). An education and care plan is established for each young person.
The outcomes from the pilot were beyond anyone’s expectations. In 2016, before the programme, only 10% of the group engaged in education. After the programme the following year, that figure rose to 56%. The programme continues to run and grow and the partnership is now being used to inform education policy and practice.
