Fletcher Building has more than 30 business units in the construction and building products sector, spanning Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific. In 2019, recognising its reach and the impact of its operations, it became the first construction company in Oceania to set and verify a science-based target to reduce its carbon footprint. Its goal is to reduce emissions by 30% by 2030.
In 2020 the company developed a carbon reduction roadmap for each of each of its business units and divisions. Initiatives include using end-of-life tyres as fuel in its cement manufacture at Golden Bay Cement, the country’s largest rooftop solar installation and the construction of a new plasterboard plant that will reduce emissions by 10%. It has set a target to gain Environmental Product Declarations to verify the embodied carbon for all its major products.
Fletcher Building is in the third year of its decarbonisation journey. Overall emissions in the 2020 financial year were 8% lower compared to 2018.
