EnergyMate is a partnership between electricity retailers, lines companies, local budgeting advisory services, the National Building Financial Capability Charitable Trust (FinCap), the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), and Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Its goal is to help families live in a warm, dry, healthy home with affordable energy costs.
EnergyMate is free and helps whānau and families with energy planning and budgeting. It also provides free LED lightbulbs – potentially saving $100 a year in energy costs.
Less than half the families going through the programme were initially able to heat living spaces sufficiently. One in ten still used an oven or unflued gas heater to heat their home. Families on the EnergyMate programme report lower energy costs. They experience better engagement with their energy retailer, and a warmer, healthier home.
