NZ Post – organisation-wide focus on environmental footprints

NZ Post Group is about delivery – to communities and businesses. As one of New Zealand’s largest employers with a portfolio of over 400 properties, NZ Post understands it has a responsibility to manage and reduce its environmental footprint.

The commitment is taken seriously and is seen as the right thing to do for Post’s business, people and the environment they operate in.

Since 2009 NZ Post has made a real step change to its worksite sustainability performance. Working with suppliers and their people, results achieved include:

  • Between 2009 and 2015 building energy use has dropped 29 per cent. During the same period energy intensity (kWh/m2/yr) has improved 26 per cent. 
  • Between 2010 and 2015 waste to landfill has dropped 68 per cent. The waste intensity (kg/m2/yr) has improved 66 per cent.
  • 77 per cent of all waste material is recycled

The key to the success of NZ Post’s efforts come from a continuing focus on resource efficiency initiatives even once ‘low hanging fruit’ have been dealt with. Considering long term change and not just putting in place ‘one off’ or short term resource efficiency projects has also played its part. In addition, all initiatives are embedded as part of ‘business as usual’ at New Zealand Post.

NZ Post is a finalist in the 2015 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards in the Auckland Council Mega Efficiency Impact category and in the EECA Business Energy Management category.
