Kiwis throw away 526 million water bottles annually. For many, the ‘drink on the go’ norm is to buy bottled drinks (usually in single use plastic) instead of simply refilling a re-useable bottle with tap water.

The RefillNZ grass roots campaign started in Wellington in October 2018 to reduce plastic pollution at source. It’s making water on tap more easily accessible and free at cafés, council facilities, bars, libraries and other participating businesses.

Well-branded station signage and strategic use of RefillNZ’s website and social media (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) gained the attention of key journalists, cafés, councils and businesses. This resulted in excellent media coverage and participation. In less than a year there are now 300+ Refill stations around New Zealand. A thousand more sites will open in the Auckland region soon. This has been achieved with grants of just $14,400 and hundreds of volunteer hours.
