Greenfern Industries’ primary focus is medical cannabis and wellness products. Initially grown to supplement animal feed, a law change in 2017 meant hemp could be grown for human consumption.
Putting hemp harvests to good use, Greenfern Industries partnered with Riddet Institute (Massey University) and Sustainable Foods to commercialise an innovative new hemp meat substitute and other hemp products.
Sustainable Foods is an alternative protein food company focused on plant-based products. Its No Meat products include mince, burgers, sausages, and meals that it supplies into the Aotearoa New Zealand retail and foodservice market.
In 2022, Sustainable Foods launched the world’s first white meat alternative under their Plan*t label. The hemp chicken was launched exclusively with My Food Bag’s plant-based and veggie bags and has since been launched into supermarkets nationwide.
