After three consecutive dry summers, flow levels in the streams that supply Tauranga City with drinking water were at the lowest level the city has experienced going into summer. With another hot summer on the way, Tauranga needed to change its approach from traditional water restrictions methodology to better manage its water demand. This led to the launch of Tauranga City Council Water Watchers Plan – a proactive year-round plan to manage the city’s water use.
The implementation of the new plan required a targeted communications and engagement campaign that educated the community on sustainable water consumption practices.
The plan was broken into three simple themes – at home, at work, in the community – and outlined clearly when and how water could be used at different times throughout the year. The plan was promoted widely through a variety of channels.
Tangible results were seen through city-wide water demand being smoothed (reduced water demand peaks) and holding at sustainable levels (around 50,000(m3/day) over peak summer months. A reduced number of reported breaches of the plan was also observed. Total demand for water has remained (on average) below last year’s usage.
Direct engagement with business and community water users through the process resulted in positive water savings. Water saving wins included a large home improvement store installing rainwater tanks and the Port of Tauranga changing internal procedures to reduce water intensive processes.
