KickStart Breakfast has fed hungry tamariki and rangatahi across Aotearoa since 2009. It is one of the longest-running, successful collaborations between government, business, schools and communities in Aotearoa New Zealand.
It is the only national ‘food in schools’ programme that is available for any school and all children. The organisation understands that hunger doesn’t recognise school deciles. Over 13 years, the programme has delivered more than 50 million breakfasts to over 1300 schools.
KickStart Breakfast is a collaboration between Fonterra, Sanitarium, the Ministry of Social Development, participating schools and local communities. Sanitarium™ Weet-Bix and Anchor™ milk are the foundation of KickStart. They enable schools to offer breakfast programmes and focus on kids’ needs rather than where the budget will come from.
The programme facilitates conversations between school caregivers and tamariki, and fosters a sense of belonging. Hundreds of teachers and volunteers are widening their knowledge of students’ needs which also strengthens their kaitiakitanga.
