KiwiHarvest is Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest food rescue organisation. It diverts - edible food from landfill and distributes it to recipient agencies who feed the ever-increasing number of Kiwis experiencing food insecurity.
It’s estimated the number of Kiwis living without reliable access to affordable, nutritious food has doubled since 2019 and has now hit one million. Meanwhile, Aotearoa New Zealand has a serious issue with food waste (about 60% of food going to landfill is still edible). The knock-on effects are contributing to both climate change and wasting precious resources that goes into producing food.
Since 2012, KiwiHarvest has distributed over 8.1 million kg of rescued food (the equivalent of more than 23 million meals) to vulnerable communities across its five nationwide branches. This has reduced greenhouse gas emissions with nearly 22 million kg of carbon equivalent emissions saved.
KiwiHarvest partners with more than 280 generous food donors and 225 recipient agencies who all share the same goal of addressing the urgent issue of rising food insecurity and food waste. The organisation also champions food education by offering free resources, presenting at public events, and collaborating with businesses to provide meaningful opportunities for their employees to volunteer.
