DB Breweries is committed to taking real climate action rather than just buying carbon offsets. The company is on a mission to zero emissions in production by 2030 and has already decreased emissions by 35% from its 2018 baseline.
Moving production sites away from fossil fuel process heat is no easy feat as each site has its own unique production process and surrounding infrastructure and businesses.
Since October 2021, all steam at the DB Draught Timaru site is fuelled by 100% sustainable biomass through its steam provider, Pioneer Energy. This is through a viable supply of biomass sourced nearby that meets Heineken’s biomass sourcing standards. The transition to 100% biomass-generated steam reduced Timaru’s coal emissions by 50% in 2021 compared to the previous year. DB is working to understand opportunities to decommission a natural gas boiler at its largest production site in Waitemata.
In August 2021, DB worked with its supplier to introduce 27 electric forklifts across its Auckland and Timaru sites to replace LPG powered forklifts. For 2021 alone, this decreased forklift emissions by 35% in Auckland and 22% in Timaru from 2020, and will eliminate these emissions in 2022.
