Lion is guided by the belief of doing the right thing for the long term. The company has a goal of a net carbon zero value chain by 2050 and is the first large-scale beverage company in Aotearoa New Zealand to receive Toitū CarbonZero certification.
Lion is working with its people and supply chain to measure, manage and reduce its emissions to align with global efforts to limit global warming to below 1.5°C.
The company has a Science-based Target for Scope 1 and 2 emissions of 55% reduction and a Scope 3 emissions of 30% reduction by 2030 (2019 baseline). Lion aims to have 100% renewable electricity in its Australian and New Zealand operations by 2025 and the remainder of emissions will continue to be offset.
In 2021, Steinlager became New Zealand’s first large scale beer brand to be Toitū EnviroCare CarbonZero certified. This means every step in Steinlager’s product life cycle has seen emissions reduced or offset.
Lion actively tracks material consumption, waste and energy usage. This includes gathering real time data from all areas of the brewery, reporting on a regular basis, and is audited to the international standard ISO14001. There is also on-going work assessing new innovative technologies which focus on thermal heat optimisation to reduce natural gas usage.
