Going Circular
2022 AWARD FINALIST
Sponsored by Auckland Council
Medsalv is leading Aotearoa New Zealand’s healthcare system towards a more sustainable future. Its sector-leading circular model is drastically cutting down waste from hospitals.
Medsalv has reimagined what is possible to the healthcare sector and delivered hundreds of thousands of dollars of savings, accompanied by tonnes of waste reduced. Single-use devices ordinarily head to landfill after one use, but since Medsalv started operating in 2018, devices are now getting safely reused up to 14 times.
Starting from an idea in 2017, trialled in one hospital in 2018, Medsalv’s remanufactured products and collection systems are now present in 52 of Aotearoa New Zealand’s 66 surgical hospitals, including the four largest districts.
Operating from a plant based in Christchurch, and servicing hospitals from Whangarei to
Invercargill, Medsalv’s entire scope 1, 2 and 3 operations are fully Carbon Zero and Climate Positive Certified, and its commitment to sustainability is unwavering and evident in every decision.
Medsalv has steadily brought the majority of Aotearoa New Zealand hospitals into a more sustainable way of operating, and others are following suit. This is particularly impressive given the challenges facing the health sector and the long lasting impact of Covid.
