The New Zealand Food Network – 2021 Awards finalist

The New Zealand Food Network

The New Zealand Food Network provides people in need with greater access to healthy food, including fruit, vegetables and protein. It collects quality surplus and donated bulk food from producers, growers and wholesalers around the country (including Sanitarium, T&G Fresh, Fonterra, Foodstuffs and Countdown) and distributes it to food rescue organisations, iwi and charities.

Aotearoa New Zealand generates more than 103,000 tonnes of food waste per year. It’s estimated that up to 60% of food sent to landfill is edible. Since July 2020, the NZ Food Network has rescued and redistributed nearly 2.6 million kg of food (equivalent of over 7.6 million meals) to communities in need. This has reduced carbon equivalent emissions by an estimated 7 million kilograms. The NZ Food Network has 45 food hub partners across the country and has opened a South Island Distribution Centre in Christchurch.

The NZ Food Network also helps community organisations with logistic and storage solutions for bulk food donations.
