The home of Yealands Wine Group sits on the north-eastern tip of the South Island in Marlborough. It’s a beautiful coastal backdrop for wine production. But it was once considered too rugged for viticulture.
Yealands is transforming this land into a 1,000 + hectare showcase for sustainability. It features 20 wetlands. There are extensive plantings of native trees and numerous innovative environmental practices.
The company has created the ‘Seaview Masterplan’. This aims to ensure its actions are strategic. It focuses on restoring the health of the waterways, caring for the coastline and extending the plantings. This also supports Yealand’s carbon offsetting and biodiversity goals.
Yealands completed this Masterplan in January 2021. It worked with “Wild Lab” Environmental Architects, Lincoln University. It took guidance from Marlborough District Council and Rangitane Iwi. The company is currently working on Phase One. This is the restoration of the main water course through its vineyard known as Station Creek. The Masterplan is comprised of five phases, covering more than 250 hectares. It’s expected to be complete within a 15-year time frame.
